The Flower That Can Drive You Crazy
The Flower That Can Drive You Crazy
Through flowers & tea, tiles & pots, all on an intimate scale, The Flower That Can Drive You Crazy represents the flow of the grand scale of Taiwanese landscape from mountains to valleys to shoreline to the ocean, then back again through clouds. Across these places are the architectural interventions of culture, which ravage nature & are themselves ravaged by nature, eventually.
On the large scale of Taiwan’s wet mountainous landscape, flows merge from tropical forest springs to mountain orchards to urban canals to delta farming to the Taiwan Strait. Architectural ceramics, mostly local red brick, direct the flow, submit to it, then like stubborn refractory re-emerge to maintain that flow.
Rem Koolhaas says that what matter in architecture are the exits and entrances. This ranges from the grand scale of a harbor to the small scale of a tea service. Arguably the world’s most common product that shows the commonality of nature and culture, tea provides us a place to make everyday life extraordinary, to live up close in the charm of ceramics.
Artist residency at NTUE (National Taipei University of Education), Department of Art and Design during 2025 and 2026 made possible this exhibition. The residency was an opportunity to combine French (Provençal) marbled ceramics with Taiwan tea ware. Artworks produced at residencies at Qing Yao, Miaoli with wood firing & Cloud Forest Ceramics, Yangmingshan with soda firing are also included in this exhibition.

Teruri Yamawaki
Have We Met Before?
Why can a place feel familiar even when visiting for the first time? During her residency in Tainan National University of the Arts, Teruri Yamawaki found herself repeatedly experiencing moments of déjà vu — through humidity, sounds, smells, fragments of conversation, and the atmosphere of everyday life. Working with local clay and beach sand, the artist approached making not as a way of explaining Taiwan, but as a way of touching and slowly connecting with the place through material, intuition, and memory.

Something Went Wrong
At the call of "The Big Wind Blows," all original order is scattered and rearranged. Moving and searching for a position amidst a blend of panic and playfulness—this is precisely my interpretation of my current state.
While tidying and settling the mess brought by this gale, I also anticipate that the wind might blow even more frantically, scattering the existing order. Through this repetitive process, I gather contradictory moments and allow everything to linger between a joke and reality—where Something Went Wrong.

Nelson Lim 林善春
Still 靜
Still — is a journey of balance and transformation.
In this series, Nelson Lim presents the spontaneous order inherent in his materials. Through the interplay of color, the softness of fibers, and the permanence attained after firing, each work generates a sense of harmonious tension within states of unstructured form.
Within the layered folds, the creases develop a quiet, measured rhythm.
This relationship between disorder and stillness, form and formlessness draws from Nelson Lim’s understanding of the Chinese philosopher Lao Zi’s teachings: “Water does nothing, yet supports all things; water takes myriad forms; still water clears itself, while moving water becomes turbid.”In the process of making these works, the artist enters a state of mindfulness and contemplation, settling into a clarity that resembles the calm of still water.

形形 Shape of Form
Yuin Chien
Born in Tainan and currently based in San Francisco, she works at the intersection of technology, design, and art. Her practice is defined by a narrative form of design that constructs new ways of seeing and sensing the world. In recent years, she has expanded her creative scope, turning to clay as a new medium. Through the intricate process of sculpting, painting, and firing, she uncovers new insights into material form, surface texture, and the aesthetic possibilities of glazes. This exhibition marks her first presentation of ceramic sculptures in the city of her home town, Tainan.

TEA — A Possible Vernacular
This project begins with tea used as material rather than ceremony.Tea leaves are burned into ash and transformed into glazes; traditional vessels shift into hybrid forms. The work does not reject tradition, nor idealize it. It suggests that tea can exist in other ways — through utility, variation, and quiet experimentation. Each piece is a study: a small step toward another vocabulary of tea.

clay on the way

Solo exhibition

Masayoshi Yoshioka
sun & moon

Daisy Toh
Scapes of Likeness

Rendering Garbage—Artifact Beast

Wandering Wilds

-
Matthieu Manche
Matthieu Manche,1969

Ahn Seong Man 安成萬
The Container of the Universe
“I have longed for the endless universe since I was a child.”
Korean artist Ahn Seong Man presents his first solo exhibition in Taiwan, where he explores the boundless imagination of the unknown universe through a series of vessel-like works.
Most of the works in this exhibition employ the “pit fire” technique, reflecting his exploration of light in the cosmos. As the smoke flows freely, it leaves behind traces reminiscent of nebulae and galaxies, capturing the mystery and vastness of the universe.
Ahn Seong Man’s creations often incorporate high-precision mold design and mechanical equipment, meticulously shaping each piece from every angle. This time, he brings forth an entirely new universe—one that emerges in an improvised symphony of smoke and fire.

Green Thumb
Nat Nicholson
Distinct ceramic tendrils are inspired by neural networks, fungal mycelium, stabilizing roots in our topsoil, and certain organisms found on Earth. Layers turn to rhythms in the clay signifying energy. As compositions, they become tangible representations of elusive thoughts and life forces. The visual language bridges cerebral landscapes with natural ecosystems, merging ideas of consciousness and nature.
When the pieces break, they become opportunities for growth. New solutions create a sense of time, erosion or sprouting, and imbue the object with visual indications of both history and the capacity for evolution. At temperature, the stone and glass become hardened, capturing the chaos of many moments frozen in time. These different phases of growth, decay, and rebirth prompt contemplation on the trajectory of ideas and the enigmatic future of existence.
Green Thumb reflects the idea of nurturing growth, akin to cultivating a garden. The work, like a garden, consists of distinct yet complementary parts which all spring from the same well and soak in the same sunlight. The shared sources are clay, minerals, stout pigments, my hands, the histories of ceramic craft and contemporary use I look to for guidance, plentiful gut-wrenching instances of life, and long lasting Earthly beauty.
